Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture, and Sport, Glenn Micallef, will address the 4th European Youth Work Convention tomorrow, 29 May. The Convention gathers 500 youth workers and representatives from the youth work sector to discuss and shape the future of youth policies and this year the three main themes in focus are: youth work core issues, the youth work environment, and youth work systems at the European, national, and local levels.
Commissioner Micallef's address will focus on the EU Youth Report, which highlights both progress and challenges for young Europeans and the European Commission's support to youth work through EU youth programmes such as Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps.
Commissioner Micallef states that “the contribution of EU programmes to youth work is clear, as is the value of this Convention. Over the last decade, 400,000 youth workers have benefitted from Erasmus/ mobility experiences, enriching the quality of youth work. And in 2020 this event recommended – in its European Youth Work Agenda – to create a coordinated European platform for youth work. And, thanks to Erasmus+, this recommendation has been realised, through the Alliance of Youth Workers Associations.”
The Convention takes place every five years, since 2010, and focusses on youth work across Europe. This edition takes place on 27-30 May in Valletta, as Malta holds the presidency of the Council of Europe. In October 2025, ministers responsible for youth from across Europe will convene in Malta to agree on strategies for putting the recommendations of this Convention into practice.
